Steam shower enclosures: glass to the ceiling

What makes a steam enclosure different: sealing, transoms, venting, and hardware choice.

A steam shower is not simply a taller enclosure. The goal here is the opposite of usual: contain vapor, not just water. The perimeter must close at the top, every joint must seal, and venting must be controllable, or steam escapes into the bathroom and fogs the mirrors.

First difference is glass to the ceiling. Panels run full height with a fixed transom above the door. Often that transom includes a small hinged vent: closed during the session, open afterward for drying. This simple detail extends the life of the whole bathroom.

Second is sealing. Every vertical and horizontal joint gets sealed, and the threshold is built for condensate rather than splash alone. Vapor migrates where liquid water never would, so small gaps that are acceptable in a normal shower are not acceptable here.

Third is hardware. Repeated heat cycles and constant humidity demand quality hinges and resilient coatings. Cheap finishes fail far faster in steam than in a standard shower, while brass bodies with PVD behave predictably.

Fourth is the ceiling and its pitch. Inside a steam enclosure the ceiling is built with a slight slope so condensate runs to the wall instead of dripping on your head. That is tile work, but it must be coordinated with the glass geometry before tiling starts.
