Florida hard water and spots on shower glass
Why glass hazes over in Florida, how to remove mineral film, and which cleaners ruin it for good.
Water in Florida is hard almost everywhere, loaded with calcium and magnesium. When a droplet dries on glass, the minerals stay behind. First it is faint spotting, after a year a dense white film, and after several years permanent etching of the surface.
The mechanism is simple: minerals gradually fill the microscopic pores in the glass and bond to it. While that bond is weak, acid removes the deposit. Once the surface is etched, only mechanical polishing helps — and sometimes only replacement.
Prevention is cheaper than the cure and takes thirty seconds. A squeegee after every shower removes the bulk of the water, and that alone keeps glass clear for years. Then once a week, a one-to-one white vinegar solution and microfiber.
For film that has already set in: warm vinegar or citric acid, ten to fifteen minutes of dwell time, then a soft sponge. Do not leave acid on hardware or seals — it attacks finishes and rubber. Rinse the glass afterward and dry it fully.
What never to use: abrasive powders, metal scrapers, toilet bowl cleaner on glass, or chlorine products near metal. All of them give a fast result and permanent damage — scratches and stripped coating.
